Repetition alone does not guarantee improvement. A learner can repeat an inefficient method, memorise a surface pattern or continue making the same error. Practice becomes more useful when each attempt produces information that changes the next one. This is a feedback loop: act, observe, interpret, adjust and try again.
Feedback should identify the next move
A mark that says an answer is wrong signals a gap but may not help the learner locate it. Effective feedback points to the relevant step, asks a question or contrasts the attempt with a principle. It gives enough direction to support revision without replacing the learner’s reasoning.
Timing depends on the task. Immediate feedback can prevent a misconception from being rehearsed during early practice. Delayed feedback may be valuable when the learner should first evaluate their own work or sustain a longer chain of thought. The design should match the skill rather than applying one schedule everywhere.
Learners need to use the feedback
Comments have little value when the activity ends as soon as they arrive. Practice should include an opportunity to correct the work, explain the change or apply the lesson to another problem. This closes the loop and shows whether the feedback changed understanding.
Reflection strengthens the process. Asking a learner to name the type of error or choose a new strategy develops the ability to monitor future work without external correction.
Technology can widen the loop carefully
Digital tools can supply frequent low-stakes practice and respond to common errors. They can vary examples and track which concepts need another attempt. Their feedback should remain traceable to the learning goal and avoid confident explanations when the system is uncertain.
Teachers can use patterns across attempts to decide whether the issue belongs to one learner, the wording of a question or the instruction itself. Aggregate signals should lead back to actual work rather than replacing it.
Useful practice is active revision, not answer production. A strong feedback loop helps the learner see the difference between intention and result, make a targeted change and gradually take ownership of that evaluative process.
